  • Drop caps
  • Color text
  • Text borders
  • Shaded boxes
  • Sidebars

If you have a children’s book, coffee-table book, or other highly illustrated book, fixed layout allows you to “fix” the images and text to exact spots on each page. Fixed-layout eBooks are the closest technology has brought us to the appearance of images and texts in a pBook. iPads, iPhones, and Amazon’s Fire, among others, have advanced capacity to display fixed-layout eBooks.

You probably need a fixed layout if your book is a:

  • Children’s illustrated book
  • Cookbook
  • Coffee-table book
  • Graphic novel
  • Technical manual
  • Book with full-page images or text that overlaps colors/images

For up to 50,000 words, to get your manuscript ready for layout, we will collate all files into the proper sequence within one file. We clean the text to be ready for InDesign layout/typesetting by removing unwanted spaces, breaks, tabs, and sections; setting paragraphs and alignments; making fonts and font sizes consistent; and ensuring that endnotes or footnotes have not been created manually.

Note: Larger word counts, special formatting, inserting of photo tags, or diacritics require a quote based on actual work.

We will design a scheme for front matter, parts, chapters, and heading levels to ensure that the structure and navigation is as clear as possible.

We select fonts, add flourishes, and design chapter opening pages to set the tone for the author, book genre, and target audience.

We follow best practice on font size, leading, justification, hyphenation, tracking, and kerning to ensure that text is perfectly polished and enjoyable to read.

We set pages to best suit the content, creating squared-off pages at identical heights, avoiding widows/orphans, and preventing awkward breaks.

We generate a final book file according to all the requirements of your chosen printer (spreads, transparency flattening, font embedding, crop marks).

Note: This price is based on text-only pages. If there are special formatting requirements or images to be included, we need to provide you a individualized quote.

We initially provide a styling sample—changes will be made to this until you are entirely happy. Next, we send the whole book as a watermarked PDF—a single set of changes to this are included before we return your final file.

Take the Next Steps in Designing Your Book’s Cover

Gather Ideas

It is often helpful to take a look at lots of book covers. Check out the bestsellers on Amazon, or walk through your local bookstore, looking at covers in your genre. Take pictures or make notes about colors, type, images, or anything else. Study the covers that grab your attention and ones that do not.

If you want to actively participate in choosing the image for your cover, visit stock photography sites such as Adobe Stock, Big Stock Photo, Shutterstock, and choose images that you like. No need to purchase them. Just save them to share with our designer and we’ll take care of the rest.
